Apia Accommodations

The Treasure Garden Hotel, above the restaurant of the same name on Fugalei St. near the vegetable market, has 21 air-conditioned rooms with TV, fridge, and private bath.

The main buildings of the Tusitala Hotel, at the beginning of the Mulinu'u Peninsula, were destroyed by fire in September, 2009. The two-story accommodation blocks containing 92 rooms escaped the flames and the hotel has been rebuilt. The Tusitala had only been was purchased by Fiji's Tanoa Group from the Japanese Kitano Corporation in early 2009 and the open fale architecture of the main buildings was appealing.

A bit farther up the breezy Mulinu'u Peninsula is the 22-room Hotel Elisa which opened in 2005. The Elisa's Beachcomber Lounge and Bar recalls a popular nightclub of the same name formerly at this location.

Just beyond, the three-story Millenia Hotel with 19 air-conditioned rooms is a bit less expensive. A live band plays in the Millenia's Tiafua Bar on Friday nights, and from Monday to Saturday there could be additional noise from the adjacent Seana Nightclub.

The Vaiala Beach Cottages, facing the lagoon at Vaiala, offers six pleasant, fan-cooled bungalows with cooking facilities and fridge. Substantial discounts are possible if you book directly rather than through a travel agent or airline. The aggressive guard dogs of this neighborhood make it unwise to walk back here from town late at night, so take a taxi. The cottages themselves are large, quiet, and safe.
