The closest village-run beach resort to Apia is Albatros Hideout Fales, opposite Albatros Island, 24 km east of Apia, has seven fale for rent under a huge pulu tree. The tree was once home to bats but the locals ate them all. The attached restaurant now specializes in Thai cuisine. The cottage decks extend along the shore with fish swimming directly below.
Saoluafata Beach Fales faces a nice beach near the Piula Cave Pool, two km east of Albatros Hideout. There are three fale, meals are served, and picnickers are welcome for a small fee. It's a good choice for a taste of this lifestyle without the long trip to Aleipata. Surfers come in summer (Dec.-Mar.) for the reef break right-hander, 90 meters off nearby Faleapuna. The Falefa, Falevao, and Lufilufi buses from the markets pass here.
